In Somerset, nothing is more important to us than family. When it comes to buying a new car, we often ask ourselves, "What is the best way to protect them?" The answer to that question can be found on IIHS.org, where the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety posts crashworthiness ratings for every vehicle it tests.

Browse long enough, and you may discover that Toyota has more IIHS Top Safety Pick models than any other brand. Even the miniscule, city-chic Toyota Prius boasts a Top Safety Pick+ for its performance in collisions, and collision-prevention technology.

Recently, the IIHS also began testing the ease of using LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) equipment in vehicles. The results were not good, but only one year after the LATCH ratings were published, many automakers have shown improvement -- and none more marked than the Prius.

"Frustrating child seat installations have become a familiar rite of parenthood," says Jessica Jermakian, an IIHS senior research engineer. "Unfortunately, these frustrations lead to mistakes that can have real consequences in the event of a crash. We're pleased to see automakers taking this issue seriously and making improvements in response to our ratings."

While many have improved, only 3 models out of the 170 tested received the highest possible rating, Good+. The Toyota Prius was one of them.
