Victor Sheppard's Toyota Tundra was among the first to roll off the assembly line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. in 2007. Sheppard, however, was no ordinary driver, and it seems his Tundra was no ordinary truck.

While the average driver puts about 12,000 miles on the odometer every year, Sheppard averaged 125,000, making frequent work-trips from Louisiana, to Wyoming, Virginia, and North Dakota.

This year, his Tundra surpassed a million miles.

Sheppard never had any doubt he would reach a million miles. "These trucks are safe and dependable," he said. "I think, if you see a Toyota on the side of the road, it might be a scam because they just don’t break down very often."

Of course, keeping any vehicle on the road so long requires dedication to regular maintenance. Sheppard made 117 dealership service appointments over his nine years owning the vehicle, mainly for routine oil changes and fluids, plus goodness-knows-how-many tires. The only major replacements were things like timing belts. The transmission and engine are both original.

"My truck looks great, and, except for a few little dents, it's almost like new," said Sheppard. "Even the seats look just as they were when I bought it. They're not as clean, of course, but they're not busted or worn out."
